ABOUT THE ARTIST

Berlin-based artist Yunchul Kim works within the realm of contemporary media art based on scientific research, the exploration of chemical substances and audiovisual effects. The resulting objects not only visualize a kinetic experiment but also a living organism that interacts with its environment. Kim’s installations, such as Effulge, Triaxial Pillars or oK, transfer cosmic radiation, acoustic, and/or vibrating impulses into ever-changing, fascinating yet puzzling images. Spectators are left with a glimpse into the world of alchemy, astrophysics and new technologies: strange, unfamiliar and at the same time capturing.
Born in Seoul (South-Korea in 1970) Kim first studied electronic music moving to Cologne to study Audiovisual Art at the Academy for Media Arts. Experimental music is still an integral part in the laboratory-oriented artistic work. Kim’s Korean routes unconsciously appear in the meditative notion and calligraphic aesthetic of his large-scale drawings.
