ABOUT THE SHOW
Katarina Poliacikova - Sonntag
Jiri Svestka Berlin is pleased to present the Slovak artist
Katarina Poliacikova (* 1982) with her first international solo show in Berlin entitled "Sonntag". With a selection of work series especially for this exhibition she explores the medium photography. Exposition, subjectivity, memory and manipulation are components of her investigation following Francois Laruelles essay The Concept of Non-Photography.
...of photography in the flesh - but not the flesh of the photographer. Myriads of negatives tell of the world, speaking in clichés among themselves, constituting a vast conversation, filling a photosphere that is located nowhere. But one single photo is enough to express a real that all photographers aspire one day to capture, without ever quite succeeding in doing so. Even so, this real lingers right there on the negatives surface, at once lived and imperceptible. Photographs are the thousand flat facets of an ungraspable identity that only shines - and at times faintly - through something else. What more is there to a photo than a curious and prurient glance? And yet it is also a fascinating secret.
(Francois Laruelle: The Concept of Non-Photography, 2011)
is it when I expose the photographic paper to the light or is it the snapshot of the sun my sister takes with her Iphone...is it the very moment when we do it simultaneously...or is it something that remains in between these two pictures
is it the paper object that curls in the sunlight...or maybe the curiosity who was the woman on that photograph and who took it
is it when you remember that you already saw a picture of the sun in this exhibition
is it when they wonder for a second if I was really standing on those meteorites
is it when I decide not to take a picture
is it none of the above
