ABOUT THE SHOW

Jiri Svestka Berlin is pleased to present the solo show of Korean artist Yunchul Kim (*1970, Seoul) entitled Eluvial Horizon. The Berlin-based artist makes use of science to art’s advantage and creates atmospheric objects by using different chemical substances named „metamaterials“. His artworks perform a visual-aesthetic task: they occupy the eye and are thereby not only minimalistic but also kinetic.

Yunchul Kim’s sculptural installations play with fascinating physical phenomena like magnetism and gravitation while being subject to the principle of coincidence. The two fluid-kinetic sculptures presented in the exhibition, Effulge (2012) and Triaxial Pillars (2011), are generating a dynamic process of constant transformation. Thousands and thousands of magnetic particles flicker about in a substance called „ferro fluid”, developed by Kim himself; sometimes they appear silvery, sometimes golden. This impressive spectacle is due to a complex assemblage of magnets, air pumps and cables, which create a symphony of vortices, currents, patterns, bubbles and flows.
Using an invisible detector for cosmic rays, Kim’s objects process surrounding sounds, movements and sound waves and transform them into visible, dynamic movements. In other words: they act as living organisms interacting with their environment. Inside the three cylinders Daisy Chain, Morpho and Pulsar (together comprising Triaxial Pillars) an integrated electromagnetic field forces the particles to twang around, while no formation is ever repeated. These works based on optical and physical occurrences but simultaneously exhilaratingly aesthetic results constitute Kim’s art.

The two most recent elements in the show provide the exhibition’s title: Eluvial Horizon. Two large-scale basins indicate black and white images, which are also formed by the force of attraction. Using a magnet, Kim has channeled particles floating in a clear liquid in a certain direction. A temporary drawing arose with ultrafine streaks and fibers that appear clearly on the white background, like on a white sheet of paper. With time and the changing climatic condition of its environment, the drawing is continuously yet minimally modified. Hereby, the simulated "eluvial horizon" (a term from geology, which describes a soil layer) is subject to climatic impacts.

An irreplaceable constituent for Yunchul Kim’s artistic approach is his laboratory. The intensive investigation of “metamaterials” becomes the origin of complex experiments that can be located at the interface of visual arts, experimental music (chemical synthesizer C-RAY) and scientific research.

On September 13, 2013 at 7 pm the artist will perform a concert in the gallery.
